소울 음악의 한 장르인 필라델피아 소울(Philadelphia soul) 색채가 강한 경쾌한 곡이다. 가사는 자유로운 삶을 추구하는 사람에 대한 내용이면서도, 엘튼 존과 친구이기도 한 테니스 선수 빌리 진 킹과 그녀의 소속 프로팀 "필라델피아 프리덤스"(Philadelphia Freedoms)에게 바치고 있다.[1]

축구, 크리켓 등 다방면의 스포츠를 좋아한 엘튼 존은 테니스도 좋아했는데, 빌리 진 킹에게 행운을 기원하면서도 필라델피아 프리덤스의 주제가로 사용할 곡을 작곡한 것이다. 엘튼 존이 버니 토핀에게 곡 작사를 부탁하자, 처음에 버니 토핀은 테니스에 관한 곡을 못 쓰겠다고 반대했지만 결국 쓰게 되었다고 한다. 버니 토핀은 가사에서 말하고 있는 건 큰 의미는 없다고 밝혔다.[2] 그럼에도 불구하고 이 곡은 애국심이나 필라델피아 도시의 정서를 묘사한 곡으로도 해석되기도 한다.

엘튼 존 팬이기도 한 빌리 진 킹은 엘튼 존이 자신에 대한 곡을 썼다는 얘기를 듣고 무척 기뻐했으며, 그녀의 팀원들도 고맙게 여겼다. 엘튼 존이 빌리 진 킹한테 이 곡을 처음 불렀을 때 크게 긴장했다고 한다.[3]

1974년 8월 미국 콜로라도주 카리부 랜치 스튜디오에서 정규 9집 Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy 작업 도중 작사/작곡되고 녹음되었지만 앨범에 넣으려고 쓴 곡은 아니었다. 이 곡은 1995년 머큐리, 1996년 로켓 음반사에서 발매된 9집 리마스터반 보너스 트랙으로 수록되었다.

3. 발매[편집]

1975년 2월 24일 싱글로 발매되어 미국 1위, 캐나다 1위, 뉴질랜드 2위, 호주 4위 등 세계 각지에서 큰 성공을 거두었다. 미국 빌보드 핫 100에서 1위에 오른 네 번째 엘튼 존 곡이 되었고, 1975년 빌보드 연말 차트에서 3위에 선정되었다. 1975년 4월 둘째 주부터 셋째 주까지 2주 연속 1위를 기록하다가 1975년 4월 넷째 주 비제이 토마스의 곡 (Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song에 의해 밀려났다.

싱글 B면에는 1974년 11월 28일 매디슨 스퀘어 가든 공연에서 존 레논과 함께 부른 비틀즈 곡 I Saw Her Standing There 라이브 음원이 수록되었다.[4] 이 음원은 1976년 라이브 앨범 Here And There 재발매반에 수록되었고, 1981년 3월에 싱글로 발매되어 영국 40위, 아일랜드 13위에 오른 적 있다.[5]

싱글 음반에 "with love to B.J.K. and the music of Philadelphia"로 빌리 진 킹, 필라델피아 프리덤스에게 바치는 문구를 담았다.

녹음 작업과 순회공연에 참여하는 백업 밴드 엘튼 존 밴드 이름으로 발매한 유일한 싱글이다.
